Asbestos Awareness Course Description

Since the early 1970’s, OSHA and EPA have been concerned with the health effects associated with asbestos exposure, This concern is based upon medical evidence associated with the inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers with various types of cancer and other respiratory diseases.

EPA regulates asbestos in school buildings, public and commercial buildings, at clean-up sites, and in certain asbestos products. EPA and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are also responsible for regulating environmental exposure and protecting workers from asbestos exposure.

This general awareness program is designed for workers potentially exposed to asbestos in the workplace, but at less than the PEL and whose job descriptions to not require them to work directly with asbestos (as in cases of abatement or repair). This course covers the characteristics of the specific material involved (asbestos), history of use in various products, the health effects, medical surveillance programs, workplace air monitoring, respirators and other personal protective equipment, and safe work practices. NOTE: This OSHA course is NOT designed to substitute the EPA-authorized State licensing programs for abatement projects, which involve up to five days of classroom training.
